will goldfish survive in the bottom of my frozen pond if there is still a little unfrozen water?
my pond is about a foot deep. I have an aerator, do I also need a heater?

they should survive and when spring comes youll find out
Your pond is a bit shallow for the fish to make it through the winter, however it could still happen.

One of the things you need to do is break the ice so that you will get gas exchange. There are a few who say that a pressure differential will kill your fish, but that is not true.

Adding a heater wouldnt be a bad idea. I would imagine that your pond is only a few hundred gallons and not very large. You could get a good heater for about 60 bucks. Marineland makes a line that is encased in plastic rather than glass so it wont shatter.
i would break the ice. do that every few days. i would also buy a heater just incase. better to be safe that sorry. get one that isnt made of glass. its cold that can cause the glass to break. just break the ice and geta heater and you should be good
its a lil too shallow so the entire pond may freeze... but yes they should make it if there is unfrozen water b/c ice acts as an insulator and keeps the water from freezing under it and plus goldfish love cold water.
It depends on how deep it is, i doubt a foot deep will do it if the tempo gets below 0. A heater won't do anything but waste electricity, what my dad does is he keeps the koi and goldfish in the house in a huge tub downstairs throughout the winter.
yes they should... my mom had a fountain with 3 goldfish and 2 minnows ( like fishing bait).. anyways, ALL the water in the fountain froze and the fish looked like they were in suspended animation. we thought for sure they were goners. but the water thawed, and the fish were still alive! This was about 3 years ago and one of the fish is actually still alive
Your goldfish will survive even if there is no unfrozen water. They will just freeze with the water, and unfreeze with the water.
You don't need a heater.
